What is Veterans Aid & Attendance?
This program is part of the “improved pension” for wartime veterans and their surviving spouses. It helps pay costs for those who need assistance with eating, bathing, medication management, and other daily tasks. The benefit can be applied toward residency at an assisted living community.
Who is eligible for this assistance?
Wartime veterans with 90 days of active duty as well as their surviving spouses may be eligible for the program. People who apply must qualify both medically and financially. Medical qualifications include the need for assistance in performing everyday tasks, such as bathing, feeding and dressing; being bedridden; physical or mental incapacity; or limited eyesight (corrected 5/200 visual acuity or less in both eyes).
How much does the benefit cover?
Eligible veterans may receive up to $1,788 per month. Surviving spouses may receive up to $1,149 per month. And a veteran with a spouse may receive up to $2,120 per month. Check with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for complete information.
