Almost everyone has experienced a bout of depression at some point in their life. The Bible holds answers to many questions, including ones about depression. There are several passages in the Bible that provide truths about depression that can help you through it. As Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 - 30,
"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light".
All of God's people have suffered since the fall — physically, emotionally and mentally. Christ himself cried out to God in despair from his torment on the cross. You are not alone in your suffering. No matter how bleak it may seem, the light of God always shines down on you.
The Bible is full of stories about the sorrows of God's people. Numbers 11:10 - 16 relates the story of Moses' complaints to the Lord about the difficulties he was saddled with. In both Psalm 51 and Psalm 32, David cries out to the Lord over his discontent.
You are not alone. Many have suffered from the feelings of doubt, fear and hopelessness that are hallmarks of depression.
In fact, it's likely that you aren't the only one in your assisted living community dealing with depression. Speaking with others about your feelings has a two-fold benefit: You get the cathartic release, and they may feel free to share their own struggles.
If you suffer the effects of depression, you can find solace in the nearness of Christ as your personal Savior. He feels what you feel and suffers along with you as you struggle with feelings of overwhelming sadness and hopelessness.
Jesus weeps with you, just as He did with the family of Lazarus in John 11. Just as He knew then that He would resurrect the man, He also knows how He will work through and in your life.
Moreover, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be with you and help you in your time of need. Comforter and counselor, the Holy Spirit cries out for you when you cannot find the words and intercedes on your behalf. "In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for {us} with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God."
There is always great hope in the Lord. As Psalm 34:18 says, "The Lord is near to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Every person is broken in their own way, but Christ makes everyone whole again.
