Understanding Respite Care

Respite care is a temporary option for adults who normally have a day-to-day caregiver. At times when the caregiver can't continue their duties or needs a break, respite care provides a safe, vibrant space for the individual to stay.

Often, respite care is provided in an assisted living or memory care community. This means that respite care residents can get all the amenities and benefits others in the community do. They can:

• Enjoy prepared meals in communal dining spaces
• Participate in scheduled activities, such as movie and game nights, exercise programs, craft classes and snack times
• Explore the community and enjoy common spaces such as seating areas, gardens or libraries
• Get the appropriate level of individualized care to manage health conditions, medications and other concerns

When Can You Use Respite Care?

Respite care is available during times when someone's primary caregiver is unable to provide care. This might include when the primary caregiver:

• Is traveling for a vacation or any other reason
• Is experiencing a big life change, such as a marriage or birth
• Simply needs a break and some rest for their own physical and mental well-being
• Needs some medical care, such as a surgery, and time to recover
